HOPE FOR TOMORROW
While listening to a voice note from my Capetonian, childhood girlfriend and fellow foodie enthusiast on Friday, celebrating the deliciousness of cherries, my next gardening adventure sprouted.
I found two methods to grow them from seeds. In the first one you use the whole cherry, but it also requires Alovera, which I don't have in the garden, yet.
Yet in the second method, though it requires carefully removing the seed from the hard shell, I'd get to plant the seeds and eat the cherries too. Honestly, I couldn't wait to start this gardening adventure. I love cherries but they are insanely expensive, yet now I'd have a justification for one little indulgence.
So I went straight to the local green grocer again and bought a small pack. Most of them got stoned and eaten right away. But I left a few to go with supper too, with instructions to everyone else to return the pips! And so they waited for me until I could finally get around to cracking the cherry stones to extract the seeds this morning. My nutcrackers proved futile, so I used water pump pliers instead. Anyway, perhaps if I had more grip strength I would have been able to exert more control, but mine was less of a cracking and more of a shattering. I resorted to glasses, not to see better but for some eye protection from the shrapnel. Also, I must say, I was disappointed by how many of the seeds were shrivelled up. Not sure if they were so by the time I bought them or became so in the short while after I stoned them, which ever way, if I manage to sprout one, max three, I’d be happy for now.Next up I divided them between two containers, one I’m placing into the fridge, the other I’m keeping in a room - out of curiosity, I want to see which progress fastest and yield the best results.Which ever way, I suspect I’ll need to repeat this exercise with cherries I’ve sourced elsewhere and crack them as I pop them, since I plan to start my own cherry grove; so a good excuse to have some more cherries soon again, I guess?
